Alan Rowe founded the United College Action Network (UCAN), Inc. in 1988 and has been like a one-person catalyst for students to attend a four-year Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Under the leadership of Mr. Rowe, U-CAN has created successful educational partnerships,support, outreach, mentoring programs and services throughout California as well as the United States.
U-CAN provides leadership, services and assistance to students who wish to gain enrollment in a four-year Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Since 1988 more than 25,000 students have received assistance from U-CAN! Additionally, more than 5,750 seniors have been accepted and 900 students have received scholarships . In total U-CAN has acquired more than $24,500,000 in scholarship monies on behalf of students.
Alan Rowe’s extensive background in public and community service also includes the following: 36 years of public service in the State of California; a 26 year member of Black Advocates in State service; a 13 year trustee, Grant Joint Union High School District, a 13 year member of Coalition of California Black School Board Members; and a 13 year member of the National Caucus of Black School Board Members.
Alan Rowe has an extensive list of awards and honors, including the 2008 California State NAACP Father of Distinction Award, 2007 Mayoral Proclamation award from the City of Fresno, 2007 Wiley W. Manuel Bar Association community service award, 2006 Sacramento Kings and Maloof Entertainment Black History Month All-Star recipient. 2005 Mayoral Proclamation award from the City of Bakersfield, 2004 Northern District Women’s Auxiliary Martin Luther King community service award, 2004 Sacramento Resolution for outstanding achievement, 2004 Rosa Parks Wall of Tolerance inductee, 2003 Sacramento Observer 40th year anniversary award for outstanding achievement in the field of education, 2003 Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the year, 2000 Community Service Award, Certificate of Recognition California Department of Correction, Faith Based Community of Los Angeles, and the 2000 State of California Governor’s Certificate for California Complete Count Census Campaign and several others awards dating back as early as 1970.
A dedicated family man that enjoys camping, fishing and playing cards (Bid-Whist in particular) he has been married to the lovely Mrs. Donna Rowe his high school sweetheart and solid source of support for 39 years in which he still affectionately refers to as “MBA” (My Black Angel) and is the father of two adult sons T’Shaka and Tsean, one grandson Alan III and a granddaughter named Alicia in which he has already committed to being a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Nonetheless he continues to be a surrogate father to thousands of students lending a considerable amount of personal time and money assisting students with a myriad of needs from personal problems, college and tuition. Alan Rowe is an ordained minister of the gospel that has authored numerous articles and publications.
