Alan Rowe, Founder Of The United College Action Network And Several Schools Join Together To Help Recruit Youth The Midyear Historically Black College Recruitment Fair held January 31-February 3, attracted close to 3,500 high school seniors from Northern and Central California. The event, sponsored by The United College Action Network (U-CAN); Grant Joint Union High School; Natomas Unified School District; United Black Student Unions of California” Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The Greater Sacramento Urban League and The OBSERVER Newspapers, was a huge success doubling in size compared to last year. “The intent of the event is to expose as many Black families as possible to the idea of attending a Historically Black College (HBC),” explained Alan Rowe, president of U-CAN. The recruitment fair featured “On the Spot” admissions and scholarships, as well as application fee waivers. Of the estimated 1,000 applications received, 400 were approved. Meeting face to face with college admission representatives allowed the students to ask questions on a variety of subjects from individuals who truly know the campus. Information regarding SAT and ACT college admission tests was also provided.
The list of colleges at the recruitment fair included: Alabama A&M University; Alcorn State University; Benedict College; Clark Atlanta College; Fisk University; Grabling State University; Hampton University; Jackson State University; Langston University; North Carolina A&T State University; Texas Southern University; Virginia Union University and others. This year’s recruitment fair added two days and two new stops to the schedule, Modesto and Bakersfield. “I’m glad to see that Historically Black Colleges are realizing that our recruitment fairs attract bright students who are serious about going to college,” Rowe said. Rowe would like to point out that even though the recruitment fair has passed, the opportunity for high school seniors to attend an HBC has not. He encourages students to call and get information before deadlines grow near. For more information call 916-921-UCAN (8226).
