With all the drama surrounding deadly hurricanes along the Gulf Coast states and parts of Texas, colleges and universities pulled off a valiant effort to participate in the United College Action Network’s (U-CAN) College Fair in Sacramento. Schools such as Xavier and Dillard affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita still made the trip to fulfill students on the West Coast dreams off attending a historically Black college of university. “They recruited and made every effort to be here,” said U-CAN president Alan Rowe of the representatives from the schools disabled by the hurricane. “The vice president of Dillard University said when they are up and running they will be bigger and better. And recruiters from Xavier assured the prospective students that they are doing everything they can (for new students) for our babies who attend the school.” Overall, the Sixth Annual College Fair was more than a success. Rowe estimated that nearly 10,000 people, including parents and high school administrators, attended the fair in various locations. Among the students, 750 attended the Charles A. Jones Skills Center in south Sacramento, 850 at Grant High School 1,000 at Hoover High in Fresno, 750 in Fairfield, 2,000 at Richmond’s Kennedy High, and 3,000 at Valley High. “The fair went incredibly well,” Rowe said. :We capped off an opportunity for schools to recruit our best and brightest. It was an outstanding week, and it was an honor to bring recruiters to services them year.” U-CAN will have its Mid-Year College Fair February 6-10 at various locations in Sacramento and an area to be determined at a later date.
